  • $1 trillion came out of regional lenders/banking systems over the past few months. That is a lot of lost lending power. (CNBC)

  • Air fares are rising at more than twice the rate of inflation, as carriers cash in on soaring demand for travel that has defied broader economic headwinds. Average ticket prices on more than 600 of the world’s most popular routes rose at an annual rate of 27.4% in February. Maybe we will remember this next time the airlines need a bailout. Or will we forget, again? Out of the $54 billion in taxpayer money gifted to airlines during COVID, only about half has to be repaid. (FT)

  • The proportion of newly built homes reached nearly 35% in December 2022, a record in data going back to mid-1982 and up from a historical norm of 10% to 20%. This should indicate to anyone that the ONLY path towards meeting demand AND keeping prices from soaring (artificially) is to build more, LOTS more! (WSJ)

  • Commercial rent-flation? Average life-sciences rents were about $65/sf in the first quarter of 2023, up from about $40/sf in the first quarter of 2020, which is a 62.5% increase in 3 years. (PS: maybe this helps partially explain why drug prices are so high?) Now – shockingly – vacancy rates are rising. (WSJ)
